Uttar Pradesh girls enter handball quarterfin­als

LUCKNOW: Hosts Uttar Pradesh continued their winning streak in the 44th National Junior Girls Handball Championsh­ip here on Friday, defeating Chandigarh 24-13 to make it to the quarterfin­als in style.

Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, defending champions Aryavart Sports Academy and runners-up Haryana too made it to the last eight grades, notching up contrastin­g wins.

Bronze medalist at the last edition, Uttar Pradesh will now take on Andhra Pradesh in the quarterfin­als on Saturday.

At the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium on Friday, UP girls kept dominated the proceeding­s from the very start. Rivals Chandigarh did well just before the end of the first half before going on break at 8-13. But after a change in the ends, the visitors found UP girls quite tough. For Uttar Pradesh, Sheetal and Aarushi scored six goals each, while Aradhana, Aarti, Moni and Radhana scored three goals each.

On the other hand, Aryavart Sports Academy (Himachal Pradesh) beat Odisha by 27-6 goals, Haryana beat Telangana 29-6.

AITA SERIES

Delhi’s Lakshya Chug and UP’s Sakshi Mishra won the boys and girls singles titles, at the AITA Under-18 Championsh­ip Series, at the Unnad Tennis Academy here on Friday.

On red clay court, Chug defeated local challenger Anshuman Singh 7-6, 6-1 in straight sets, but Sakshi had to struggle a bit before brushing aside compatriot Shakti Mishra 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in three sets.

GRAPPLING WRESTLING

The National Grappling Wrestling Championsh­ip will be held from October 20 to 22, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi under the joint aegis of Grappling Committee of India and Wrestling Federation of India, states GCI’s member, Sanjay Rai.
