Sports hostel, college to reopen this month

After a gap of two years, all the 44 sports hostel for 16 discipline­s in as many as 18 districts across the state would reopen on April 5, while three sports colleges will re-start functionin­g from April 18. All the sports hostels and colleges were closed in March 2020 as soon as the country went to nationwide lockdown following the outbreak of pandemic COVID19.

UP’s director sports, RP Singh on Friday said that a decision to this effect was taken in view of the state government’s guidelines after the COVID19. In all 890 sportspers­ons, including girls would be benefitted with the re-opening of the sports hostels.

“The orders have been issued to all regional sports officers to reopen the sports hostels from April 5 and they have also been asked to follow the COVID19 protocols,” Singh states.

All three sports colleges i.e. Guru Gobind Singh Sports College (Lucknow) with a total strength of 345 inmates, Vir Bahadur Singh Sports College (Gorakhpur) with a total strength of 320 and Saifai Sports College with a total strength of 560 inmates would reopen from April 18.

Singh also informed that fresh trials to select inmates for different hostels of all 16 discipline­s for the new season will also start on April 11 in the state at the district level. The regional trials will start on April 20, whereas the trials at the state level would take place from May 1to4.

One-sided affairs remained the order of the day at the 32nd AllIndia KD Singh ‘Babu’ Under-14 Hockey Tournament here on Friday as 30 goals were scored in as many as three league matches, at the Padma Shri Mohd Shahid Synthetic Hockey Stadium.

Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu crushed Uttarakhan­d 14-0, whereas Flickers Brothers outplayed Naval Tata Academy*

12-0. Haryana’s Guru Hokey Academy beat Tamil Nadur Hockey Academy 2-1 in the third match of the day.

RISHI EXCELS

Rishi Yadav, a trainee at the Vinaykhand Stadium here in Gomti Nagar, hogged limelight at the consecutiv­e soft tennis national championsh­ips last month. Rishi, 11, first won boys doubles gold at the 16th Junior National Championsh­ip at Ahmadabad. While pairing with Om Yadav, energetic Rishi defeated the local duo of Vansh and Jyotirmay 4-2.

His second medal of the month came at the 15th SubJunior National Championsh­ip at Srinagar, where he won a silver medal in the team event, before winning a bronze medal in the boy’s doubles. Rishi is being coached by Sameeksha Yadav.

FINE SHOW

Staging a fine show, Uttar Pradesh finished runners-up at the 21st National Sub-Junior Wushu Championsh­ip at Kanyakumar­i with 14 medals, including two gold, four silver and eight bronzes.

The medal winners included, Mayank Rosha, Payal Solanki, Saransh Mishra, Tapish Poonia, Shreya Bhati, Anushka Kumari, Ayush Saini, Shaurya Kumar, Priyank Kumar, Anurag Panwar, Preet Nagar, Khushi Kashyap, Shivanjali Sharma and Aryansh Kumar.
