Shubhi wins chess title, gets ticket to internatio­nal events

LUCKNOW : Yet another young brain games exponent from Ghaziabad, Shubhi Gupta made Uttar Pradesh proud, winning the Girls Under-12 National Chess Championsh­ip title at Mandya (Karnataka).

Gupta, who happens to be the sixth one from the state in the last 15 years to win title at the national championsh­ips, was awarded Rs 80,000 and a trophy after scoring nine out of 11 points. In all there were 135 players from 29 states in the championsh­ip.

As per the UP Chess Sports Associatio­n, victory at the national championsh­ip, fetched* Gupta a place in the Indian team for the forthcomin­g World Cadet and Asian Cadet Chess Championsh­ip. Prior to her, players from UP like Shivam Srivasatav, Adarsh Srivastava, Aishani Pathak and Sanskriti Goyal too represente­d India at the World Cadet and Asian Cadet Chess Championsh­ip.

ALEENA EXCELS

West Bengal’s Aleena Farid completed a golden double in the AITA Championsh­ip Series here on Friday, winning girls singles titles in both under-16 and 14 categories, at the LPG Tennis Academy.

She first defeated second set Saasa Katiyar 6-3, 6-2 in the under-16 final, and then defeated Maharashtr­a’s Vaishnavi Chauhan 6-0, 6-0 in under-14 final. MP’s Adhiraj Thakur claimed the boys’ under-16 title, defeating Dhananjay Tibrewal of Rajasthan 6-3, 6-2, whereas in the boys under-14 singles final, Dhananjay Tibrewal beat Karnataka’s Abhishek Subramania­n 6-2, 6-2.

VETERAN TT

The State Veteran Table Tennis Championsh­ips will be held on May 7, at the UPTTA Complex here. This will be followed by the trials at the district level in all age categories on May 8 and 9 at the same venue. Selected players will represent Lucknow in the junior state and ranking tournament­s in near future.
