Divyanshi keeps UP’s hopes alive

LUCKNOW: Agra’s Divyanshi Gautam is right on target. On Monday, she kept Uttar Pradesh’s hopes alive in the 34th Sub-Junior Under-13 National Badminton Championsh­ip2022, storming into the semi-finals of the girl’s singles category, shocking second seed Supriya Rao of Andhra Pradesh in straight games here.

Fifteenth seed Gautam after winning the first game by 21-11 was leading by 10-6 when her opponent Rao retired due to an injury, at the UP Badminton Academy. This wasn’t all as even in the morning, Gautam upset seventh seed Shaina of Karnataka 21-8, 22-20 also in straight games.

On the other hand, UP’s pair of Divyanshi and Jhanvi lost in the pre-quarterfin­als of girls’ doubles. They were defeated by top seeds Lakshya ND and Diksha SR of Tamil Nadu 21-7, 21-10. Besides this, there were many upsets in the quarter-finals as well. Third seed Lakshya ND of Tamil Nadu in girl’s singles, fifth seed Vedant Pahwa in boy’s singles, second seed Delhi’s Riyan Malhan too faced exits.

In the quarterfin­als on Monday, eighth seed Odisha’s Tanvi Patri defeated Tamil Nadu’s Diksha SR 21-17, 22-20, fifth seed Andhra Pradesh’s Tanmai Dhamam defeated 16th seed Mohita Polavaram of Tamil Nadu 21-18, 21-15, whereas sixth seed Renushree of Andhra Pradesh defeated Tamil Nadu’s Lakshya ND 21-13, 21-17.

In the boys’ singles quarterfin­als, 16th seed Rishav Nagangom of Manipur defeated fifth seed Vedant Pahwa of Haryana 21-18, 21-13, fourth seed Nishant of Telangana beat Anarv of Assam 21-10, 16-21, 21-16, Naga Chaitanya Reddy of Andhra Pradesh beat Akhilesh Goud Somgani of Telangana 21-19, 11-21, 21 From -13, 11th seed Akhil Reddy Bopa of Andhra Pradesh beat Delhi’s Riyan Malhan 15-21, 21-9, 21-14.

Top seeds Lakshya ND and Diksha SR of Tamil Nadu, third seeds Shayana Manimuthu and Akiya Shetty of Karnataka also registered wins in the girls’ doubles quarterfin­als. On the other hand, Telangana’s Aaradhya Reddy Hanumaiah Ghari and Avani Reddy Hanumaiah Ghari got a walkover.

Young Siddharth Sagar won the decider to help Lucknow’s Dabang Daredevils of Lucknow Golf Club win the National Amateur Golf League at Hyderabad, defeating hosts Hyderabad 3-2. Dabang Daredevils have also been the winner of the Avadh Golf League. In the semifinal they defeated Kolkata.
