From hammer to discus throw, women break records on Day 8

: Those in attendance were reminded of Marvel’s fictional character of ‘Lady Thor’ as Meerut’s Tanya Chaudhary astounded everyone by creating a new record in women’s hammer throw. On Day 8 of the third edition of the Khelo India University Games on Tuesday, Tanya, a student of Meerutbase­d Chaudhary Charan Singh University, threw the hammer to a distance of 60.61 metres at the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College in Lucknow.

Similarly, Barkatulla­h University’s Shalini Chaudhary also gave a jaw-dropping performanc­e in women’s discus throw.

Scripting a new record, Shalini threw the discus 50.60 metres away. She was followed by Guru Kashi University’s Bhavana Yadav (46.43m) and Anisha (44.66m) of Lovely Profession University.

On the day, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (deemed university), Bhubaneshw­ar, made quite an impression by winning four gold medals in track and field contests. Meanwhile, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) won the women’s tennis gold with a 2-0 win over Osmania University.

In men’s tennis, Anna University prevailed over Bharathiar

University, Coimbatore. The bronze in women’s tennis went to Jain University while Gujarat University (GU) bagged the bronze medal in men’s tennis at the Ekana Sportz City complex in Lucknow. Separately, in the men’s hockey semi-finals, Punjabi University, Patiala, rushed Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur. Also, GNDU, Amritsar, beat Sambalpur University, Odisha, in the shootout. MDU, Rohtak, defeated University of Mysore in the women’s team semi-finals whereas ITM, Gwalior, beat Punjabi University.

In shooting competitio­n, GNDU picked up two of the four gold medals.

Additional­ly, Anjali Patel lifted a total of 149-kg (67kg snatch+82kg clean and jerk) to win gold in the women’s 45 kg for Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth whereas Varanasi’s Gyanashwar­i Yadav won the women’s 49-kg gold for Hemchand

Yadav Vishwavidy­alaya by lifting a total of 173 kg.

Meanwhile, continuing their overall good performanc­e at the Khelo Games, Punjabi University, Patiala, made it to as many as three of the six finals in the compound archery category. Their archers won their respective semi-finals at the BBD University Cricket ground on Tuesday. Guru Kashi University (GKU) and GNDU also made it to the finals.

For Punjabi University, their compound men’s team defeated CCSU in their semi-final clash while their women’s team got the better of GKU. Apart from these, Aman Saini defeated Ritik Sharma of GNDU in the men’s individual semi-finals to take his spot in the men’s individual final against Rishabh Yadav of the University of Delhi. On the other hand, Yadav defeated Deepak Kumar of Nagpur University 148-142 to make it to the title round.
