63 gold purifying units sealed in Karol Bagh
NEW DELHI: The North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday sealed 63 gold purifying units running illegally from residential areas in Karol Bagh.
The action was taken a week after the civic agency inspected these sites and issued show cause notices to 500 units running from 103 properties in Beadonpura and Regarpura areas in Karol Bagh.
“On the basis of a survey carried out earlier, we visited 37 properties on Friday. In these properties, 63 units were found conducting business. We will continue the drive on the weekend as well and seal other units. The drive has been intensified as the Ministry of Environment and Central Pollution Control Board had also asked us to take action against such units,” said Kapil Rastogi, deputy commissioner, Karol Bagh zone.
Officials said the workers were cleaning gold by using techniques that were hazardous to the environment .
“They had installed furnaces and were using acid (nitric acid) to purify gold. The acid is highly toxic to the environment, adds to particulate matter and causes respiratory problems. Many of these units were located inside the narrow residential lanes of Beadonpura and Regarpura areas in Karol Bagh,” said Rastogi.
