MANSA: An angry mob set the house of a local doctor on fire and damaged his hospital after a 14-year-old boy died due to the alleged negligence of the hospital staff on Wednesday.

Narinder Garg, a Class8 student at the local Arya High School, was admitted to Akashdeep Hospital, being run by Dr Akashdeep, on Monday night as he was suffering from fever.

After he showed no signs of recovery, the family took him to a private hospital in Bathinda on Wednesday morning, where the doctors declared him dead.

Mamta Garg, the widowed mother of the child, is a peon at a local school and his 17-yearold brother is mentally unstable.

As the word spread, an angry crowd targeted the private hospital at Mansa and also damaged a chemist shop on its premises. The crowd got the hospital vacated before vandalising it. After damaging the hospital, they moved to the doctor’s house nearby and set it afire besides torching his two scooters parked outside.

The police remained a virtual spectator and failed to stop the mob that also forced a fire brigade van to go back. Later, the fire was brought under control.

No case has been registered; but the district administration set up a medical board to probe the reasons behind the death.

The damage to the house and hospital is yet to be ascertained. After the post-mortem, the body was cremated in the evening.

Meanwhile, Dr Akashdeep reportedly went to a safe location fearing an attack.
