Traffic blocked at Nangal over villager’s death
NANGAL: Three policemen have been suspended and a special investigating team ( SIT) formed to investigate the death of a resident of Dubeta village near Nangal after being allegedly beaten up by policemen a fortnight ago.
SP (investigation) Harmeet Singh Hundal said munshi Gurnam Singh had been arrested and Nangal station house offiicer (SHO) Kesar Singh, assistant subinspector Balbir Singh and ASI Deepak Kumar had been placed under suspension. He said the police had written to the health department to take action against the doctor who had attended to Surinder at the BBMB hospital, Nangal, on August 17.
Meanwhile, a large number of people on Monday staged a dharna near Nangal Dam to block traffic to protest against the death of Surinder Singh, 50, who was allegedly beaten up by the police personnel a fortnight ago.
Surinder allegedly had an alteraction with one Gurnam Singh, posted as munshi at Anandpur Sahib police station and a resident of Dubeta village, and his family on August 16. Surinder’s family alleged that he was beaten up by Gurnam and his family and also by the Nangal police personnel. He was rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, on August 17 after his condition deteriorated.
Surinder’s wife filed a complaint with the Nangal police, which allegedly failed to take action.
The family and villagers held a protest outside the Nangal police station on Sunday forcing the police to register a case.
