ROHTAK: A 62-year-old man was killed in a lift mishap at the new OPD (out-patient department) of the Post Graduate Institute of Management Sciences (PGIMS) here on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Anand Swaroop of Rohtak’s Janta Colony.

According to his family, Swaroop had gone to the PGIMS for treatment of kidney stones.

Sources said eight lifts at the new OPD stopped due to power cut while several patients were aboard. “One elevator operator began rescuing the stranded patients from all the eight lifts. The lift in which Swaroop was aboard had stopped a little above the second floor and the stranded patients were asked to jump on the floor. While trying to jump out, Swaroop fell down in the shaft.”

Police said Swaroop suffered a head injury and the actual reason of his death would be revealed after the postmortem report. On the complaint of Swaroop’s son, police registered a case against the hospital authorities for negligence, a police spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, leader of the Opposition in Haryana assembly and INLD MLA from Ellenabad Abhay Chautala demanded Haryana health minister Anil Vij’s resignation over the mishap. “Anil Vij should resign while taking moral responsibility for the death of the patient and strict action must be taken against the guilty. If an XEN could be suspended because of power cut at the minister’s programme, why not strict action for the death of a common man,” Chautala said.

The INLD leader was addressing a Sadbhavna rally organised by the party at Kiloi village in the district.
