To give students more time, DU may begin admissions March-end

NEW DELHI: This year’s undergraduate admission process at Delhi University is likely to start from March-end, two months in advance to avoid the last-minute rush.

The process will continue as usual till mid-June. The move is expected to give about two-and-ahalf months to students to look for and select their preferred colleges, register online and fill in their marks once their board results are out.

Usually, DU starts its admission by May-end and wraps it up by mid-June, giving students just about three weeks to complete the registration process.

In 2016, the registration procedure started on June 2 and ended on June 19.

“We are planning to start the registration process from March-end. Students can start filling out details and when the board results are announced they can submit the form with the marks,” said an official, who didn’t wish to be named.

The plan is among a host of suggestions that DU’s admission committee, appointed by the vice chancellor, will submit to a higher panel for approval.

“It will have to be approved by the academic council and executive council to be implemented,” the official said.

The exact schedule will be announced later.

A longer admission process will help students avoid last-minute chaos. Students from boards that announce results much before the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and those taking a year’s off are also expected to benefit from it.

“They can now fill out the form earlier,” the official said.

The system of filling out forms and uploading certificates will not change, and the registration form can be submitted on or before the last date. Personal details, address and caste certificates can be filled in advance and the forms can be submitted once students get their board scores, officials said.

The Capital’s premier university is planning to introduce entrance tests for admissions to commerce graduate courses from this year.
