An irate mob blocked Jammu-Poonch national highway at Bagnoti in Nowshera tehsil of Rajouri district on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday for over six hours after a rashly-driven bus hit a pedestrian and killed him on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Kumar, 25, son of Ram Parkash of Bagnoti. Belonging to penury-ridden family, the deceased, a postgraduate, was working in a private school at Dandeshar.
“He was walking back home around 8 pm on Sunday when a rashly-driven bus hit him from behind, killing him on the spot. The boy was the only bread winner of his family comprising his old parents and a younger sister,” said a police officer. His father is over 60 years of age and worked as a labourer.
The bus was on its way to Jammu from Nowshera. The officer said after the accident, its driver managed to escape from the spot.
After the accident, an irate mob from Bagnoti blocked the highway, demanding immediate arrest of the driver, adequate compensation to the family and a government job to the sister of the deceased.
Sensing the gravity of the situation additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Mumtaz Ali, additional superintendent of police (ASP) Mohammed Yousuf and sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Harbans Lal rushed to the spot to pacify the protestors.
Around 2 am, ADC Mumtaz Ali provided ₹50,000 as immediate relief to the family.
