ARMY GETS 423 OFFICERS, ONLY 17 FROM PUNJAB

The Indian Army got 423 new officers on Saturday after the passing out parade of 140 regular and 123 technical graduate courses from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, on Saturday.

A total of 490 gentlemen cadets, including 67 from 10 friendly nations, took part in the parade. Army chief General Bipin Rawat took the salute.

He gave away the chief of the army staff banner to Singarh Company for standing overall first among 16 companies of the academy.

The IMA’s prestigiou­s Sword of Honour award was presented to Assam’s Avinash Chhetry for topping the batch. Vikas Sangwan was presented the silver medal for standing second and Rohit Joshi received the bronze medal. Akshay Singh Bisht was presented the silver medal for standing first in the technical graduate course.

SRINAGAR: In a second militant attack on security forces in the Qazigund area of Anantnag district in a week, militants opened fire on two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) vehicles at Vessu on the Srinagar-Jammu highway on Saturday morning, missing the target and injuring a civilian in a car behind them.

The civilian, Arif of Anantnag, was on his way to work at a constructi­on company at Banihal when the militants fired. The fire missed the target and hit his car (JK 02BJ 6600), injuring him in the back, police said.

Though he is stable, he was referred to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) in Srinagar. Residents said they heard gunshots soon after the morning prayers at 5am. 20 empty cases of AK ammunition were recovered from the spot. Army launched a search for the militants.

STRATEGIC HIGHWAY

On June 3, two soldiers were killed and four injured in a militant ambush on an army convoy near a toll post at Qazigund, 70 km from Srinagar, on the highway. The 8.45-km Jawahar Tunnel connects Banihal in Jammu region with Qazigund in Kashmir on the 300-km strategic highway. The attack comes ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on June 29.
