The police have arrested a national and a state-level athlete for allegedly murdering a Rithal village resident in August this year.

The victim, Ankit, was shot dead on Ladhot Road when he was going for a court hearing.

The two arrested athletes have been identified as Ashok alias Hooter, a state-level Kabaddi player, and Sanjeet alias Shakti Pehelwan, a national games gold medallist in Javelin throw. Sanjeet, who had escaped police custody, had been carrying a reward of ₹25,000 on his head.

Their accomplice identified as Sunil was also arrested.

The police said Sanjeet and Ashok worked for jailed gangster Shani Dev alias Kuki, and had killed Ankit during their ongoing gang-war. Ankit was accused of killing Shani Dev’s brother Sukhwinder, a nationallevel kabaddi player, in March 2016.

Ankit was going to attend the court hearing in Sukhwinder’s murder case on August 11, when Ashok, Sanjeet and their accomplice allegedly killed Ankit. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera installed in the area.

Rohtak SP Pankaj Nain said the police have recovered two pistols, a revolver and 13 live cartridges from Sanjeet and Ashok’s possession.

He said they were roaming near industrial model town in Rohtak and were planning to kill another accomplice of Ankit. They had also planned the murder of their rivals in Panipat court complex, the SP said.

He said Sanjeet and Ashok had over a dozen cases of heinous crimes registered against them.
