Body-shaming against sportswomen an insult on nation’s pride: Sakshi
Olympic bronze medal-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik said on Tuesday that bodyshaming against sportswomen is an insult on the country’s pride.
Sakshi said this during a function in Bhopal to felicitate with ₹25 lakh by the Madhya Pradesh sports department for winning the bronze medal in the Rio Olympics last year.
“How people forget that sportswomen bring laurels to the country due to their hard work and excellence and not because of their clothes or personal life. People shouldn’t interfere in the personal life of any woman because by doing so they demean themselves,” she said.
“I believe in responding to my critics with my performance. I also faced criticism and absurd comments by people, who were affected by the vice of gender discrimination. They used to tell my parents that wrestling was a game where only boys could excel,” she said.
“Being Haryana’s brand ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, I am trying to motivate people to help their daughters chase their dreams,” she said.
HAILS DEATH PENALTY BILL FOR CHILD RAPISTS
Sakshi hailed a bill passed by the Madhya Pradesh assembly awarding death penalty to those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 and below.
The assembly on Monday unanimously passed the bill providing for capital punishment to convicts in cases of rape and gang-rape of girls up to the age of 12. “I totally agree with the move,” she said.
“Other states should also come forward with such a bill as it will not only enhance the safety of women but also create terror among those who want to commit such heinous crime”, she said.
