NAWANSHAHR: Mystery shrouds the death of a young couple, married just six months ago, in the town’s Valmiki Mohala, on Thursday. According to the police, a 27-year-old man, Ricky, consumed poison and was found dead at his house; this was hours after his wife, Poonam Ghai, had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at the same house on Thursday morning.

Ricky worked as a supervisor with the civic body of Swachh Bharat campaign and used to leave home about 6am for work and returned about 9am. During this time, Poonam was alone at home.

“Ricky returned to his house to find Poonam hanging from the ceiling fan. He contacted his relatives, telling them that Poonam was unwell, and rushed her to a private hospital. However, she was declared brought dead,” said Nawanshahr City SHO Shahbaz Singh. The SHO added that Ricky had left the hospital on the pretext of getting money from abroad.

“He consumed a poisonous substance at his residence and died. His kin reached his place and discovered his body and took him to a hospital where he, too, was declared brought dead,” the SHO said.

He said Ricky and Poonam’s families had refused to register a case as they were unaware of the reason behind the suicide. “Their families don’t know why the couple took the extreme step as no suicide note was recovered,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have handed over the bodies to the family members after conducting a post-mortem.
