Navjot Kaur Sidhu appointed as Punjab Warehousing Corporation chairperson
Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday appointed former legislator Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, as director and chairperson of the state warehousing corporation.
As per an official spokesperson, the chief minister handed over the appointment letter to Navjot Kaur at his official residence this evening.
The appointment of Navjot Kaur, who was accompanied by her husband and rural development minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, will be effective from her date of joining, as per the notification issued in this regard.
Navjot Kaur, the then BJP leader, represented the Amritsar (East) constituency in the previous SAD-BJP regime.
However, as the Sidhu couple switched over from BJP to join the Congress party shortly before the 2017 Punjab assembly polls, Navjot Kaur had to opt out of the race for contesting, owing to the ‘one-family-one-ticket’ norm, which was strictly enforced by Congress in Punjab during the previous polls.
Navjot Singh had contested from the Amritsar (East) assembly seat and won.
The move is seen as the CM’s attempt to placate Sidhu after his government’s stand in a road rage case in the Supreme Court. The state’s counsel had told the court that Sidhu’s statement denying his involvement in the case was ‘false’.
The minister’s close aide, former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh, too, was denied a berth in the recently expanded state cabinet.
