CHANDIGARH : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday demanded a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to discuss the “brutal attack” on party MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa and a new mining policy for the state.

A party delegation led by leader of opposition in Punjab assembly Sukhpal Singh Khaira, which met governor VP Singh Badnore in Chandigarh, made the demand, besides seeking a thorough review of the security scenario in the state.

The party also sought arrest of the absconding assailants, besides more security for the legislator.

Punjab AAP state unit co-president Balbir Singh and several MLAs, Baljinder Kaur, Nazar Singh Manshahia, Baldev Singh, Kanwar Sandhu, Jai Kishan Rodi and Manjit Singh, were part of the delegation.

Condemning the attack on the Rupnagar MLA, Khaira said, “During the past 10 years, the mining mafia flourished under the Shirmoani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) rule. Unfortunately, things have not changed even now and this mafia continues to flourish under the present Congress regime too,” he said.

Khaira rubbished allegations levelled by the SAD that Sandoa’s attackers were actually AAP supporters who were protesting extortions by the Rupnagar legislator.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the police failed to arrest the main accused.

DHARNA HELD IN RUPNAGAR

RUPNAGAR: The party organised a dharna in Rupnagar as well.

Addressing the party workers, AAP Punjab co-president Dr Balbir Singh said massive dharna will be organised at Rupnagar on June 25.

Khaira questioned the silence of the Akal Takht jathdar regarding the removal of Sandoa’s turban in Thursday’s attack.

AAP workers also burnt an effigy of the Punjab government.
