Women’s hockey team thrashes hosts
Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored a hat-trick as the Indian women’s hockey team thrashed lowly Indonesia 8-0 to begin its Asian Games campaign on a rousing note on Sunday.
Gurjit found the target in the 16th, 22nd and 57th minutes while Vandana Katariya (13th and 27th) struck twice. Udita (6th), Lalremsiami (24th) and Navneet Kaur (50th) were the other Indian scorers. On Monday, Indian men’s team faces Indonesia.
BADMINTON TEAM WINS
The Indian badminton team thrashed minnows Maldives 3-0 on Sunday. World No 8. Srikanth brushed aside Maldives’ Hussein Zayan Shaheed Zaki 21-4, 21-5 to give India a 1-0 lead. World No. 11 H S Prannoy then outclassed Mohamed Sarim 21-8, 21-6. B Sai Praneeth beat Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed with a 21-7, 21-8.
KABADDI SIDES STAR
India’s men’s and women’s kabaddi teams won their respective games on Sunday. Indian men out-muscled Bangladesh 50-21 and then overpowered Sri Lanka 44-28 in the second match. India will now face South Korea on Monday. Indian women’s crushed Japan 43-12 and will now face Thailand.
PRAKASH FIFTH
Indian swimmers Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj finished fifth and seventh respectively in the men’s 200m butterfly and 100m backstroke events.
MIXED TEAM ADVANCES
In the mixed doubles tennis competition, India’s Divij Sharan and Karman Kaur Thandi defeated Phillippines’ Alberto Lim and Marian Jade Capadocia 6-4, 6-4 to enter the Round of 16.
