4 killed, 50 injured in two road accidents in Karnal

At least two people died and 50 other sustained injuries after a over-crowded Haryana Roadways hit a tree on the Karnal-Garhi Birbal road on Friday evening.

Police said the deceased have been identified as Sham Murari, 58, of Gheer village and Nirmla, 55, of Garhi Birbal village in the district. The injured were rushed to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital, Karnal.

The accident took place when the driver of the bus tried to save a motorcycli­st near Mehanmati village and lost control over the vehicle, which hit a roadside tree. Local residents rushed to the spot and took out the passengers, including the two deceased, from the bus.

Karnal superinten­dent of police (SP) Surender Bhoria, who also reached the spot, said two deaths were confirmed and the condition of the injured was stable.

TWO CRUSHED TO DEATH BY CANTER

In another incident, two youths were crushed to death by a canter on the Kunjpura road in Karnal town. The deceased have been identified as Sahil Kumar (19) of Basant Vihar, Karnal, and Bunti (18) of Hasanpur village of Panipat. They were electricia­ns and were staying in Valmiki Basti of Karnal.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Karnal Civil Lines police station in-charge Mohan Lal said the driver of the canter has been arrested and booked under Section 304 A of the IPC. He said the bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital.
