Cop killed, 2 injured as jeep collides with mini-truck

A cop was killed and two others injured when the jeep they were travelling in collided with a mini-truck near Pehowa on National Highway 65 on Friday morning.

As per the Pehowa Police, the mini-truck was coming from the Ambala side, when it collided with the police van. The deceased was identified as constable Pawan Kumar, who was in his late 20s.

Yaspal Singh, the Pehowa station house officer (SHO), said that Kumar died on the spot while his fellow cops have been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. He added that assistant sub-inspector(ASI) Jaipal was referred to a private hospital in Kaithal and special police officer (SPO) Madan was admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.

“All these cops were deputed in VIP security at Kaithal. The police jeep was part of former Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) internatio­nal working president Praveen Togadia’s cavalcade, which was going towards Kurukshetr­a,” said a police officer pleading anonymity.

SHO Yaspal Singh said that the mini-truck driver fled from the spot after the mishap. And the Pehowa police have registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 279 (rash driving)and 304 (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC).
