PSG DISPLAY DEPTH

-

Manchester United’s winning run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to an end on Tuesday night with a 2-0 defeat against PSG. With the Red Devils facing an uphill task in the second leg, HT looks at the talking points:

PARISIANS DOMINATE

The absence of Neymar and Edinson Cavani proved to be a blessing in disguise for PSG as they maintained their shape throughout and didn’t allow United a chance to mount a comeback. Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria

were a constant threat for United as they troubled their defence with their pace. If not for their inaccuracy, PSG would have ended with a bigger victory margin.

PROBLEMS FOR UNITED

United’s hopes were hampered by first-half injuries to Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, the latter particularly damaging given his brilliant recent form. United did show character throughout the match but they simply did not have the weapons to trouble PSG.

They were dealt a further blow when Paul Pogba was sent off in the last minute of regulation time. Pogba will now miss the second leg. The Frenchman had found his mojo and United will definitely miss him in the return leg.

DI MARIA SHINES

Angel Di Maria shrugged off the constant jeering from United fans and produced contributions of real significance in PSG's win. PSG’s opener came off his corner, scored by Presnel Kimpembe. He showed what he was capable of when he outpaced United's retreating defence and put a perfect cross to Mbappe for the second. Di Maria was given a standing ovation by PSG fans when he was replaced later on after finally showing his real worth at Old Trafford.
