CHANDIGARH: The election commission (EC) has ordered a re-poll at Asaoti polling station in Faridabad Parliamentary constituency following complaints of electoral malpractice. The re-poll will be held on May 19.

The commission also took a serious note on failure to take immediate action on the incident and transferred the returning officer, Atul Kumar, who is also the deputy commissioner of Faridabad. Ashok Kumar Garg, will now be posted in his place as DEO and returning officer of Faridabad. An EC spokesperson said a complaint of violation of secrecy of voting was reported on Sunday. On inquiry by the poll observer, the complaint was found to be true. The commission has therefore ordered a fresh poll.

An FIR was lodged under Section 171 C (undue influence at elections) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 135 of RP Act 1951 against the polling agent Giriraj Singh.
