Muktsar village passes resolution to boycott love marriage

-

MUKTSAR: Residents of village Wattu are not just frowning upon young people falling in love and marrying within their own village, but have gone ahead and passed a resolution of sorts, to socially boycott village youth who opt to do so.

The matter came to light when a video of people passing the resolution in the village in Muktsar district on Monday, went viral on social media and became the talk of the town.

Residents gathered in the local gurdwara and passed the resolution, which has been signed by a large section of the residents. This step is getting mixed response from different sections of the society.

The question is – is it about love or honour? The rule applies if the both partners belong to the same village, but ‘cross village border’ love may win a grudging approval. From this, it seems more like a case of dent in honour, a sentiment the elderly in small-town India hold onto dearly.

Raj Singh, a resident of Wattu said, “Parents feel insulted when youngsters choose to marry someone in the same village. Villagers have decided to social boycott couples who decide to do so.”
