GURDASPUR : Citing ‘great deeds’ done by prime minister Narendra Modi in the past five years, foreign minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj sought votes for the BJP at an election meeting at a palace in Gurdaspur.

She was garnering support for BJP-SAD candidate Sunny Deol who is contesting from the Gurdaspur seat in the current Lok Sabha polls in Gurdaspur on Monday.

Swaraj spoke of five aspects on which a government’s performance can be judged – the state of national security, what the government did for it, the nation’s status in the world, economic condition of the nation, national development and public welfare works.

The foreign minister said that Congress government had failed to act against Pakistan after the Mumbai Taj terrorist attack, but the Modi government struck down terrorist training camps at Balakot in Pakistan, as a response to Pulwama.

She cited how due to the govt efforts, Pakistan was isolated and Azhar Masood was tagged as global terrorist at the UN.

Swaraj reminded people about other work accomplished by the Modi govt, such as – bringing back 2.5 lakh Punjabis held in foreign countries, bringing India to 75th rank economically as against 142th rank during Congress regime, raising the cleanliness ratio to 98 per cent as against 40 per cent during Congress rule, building 10 crore toilets especially for poor women, granting 10 per cent reservation in admissions to educational institutes and jobs to the poor of the general categories, making commission for the OBC’s, opening Eklavya Schools for the Adi Vasis, and more. Swaraj said that Sunny Deol is not only a film celebrity, but a son of Punjab too and that was why he was fielded from Gurdaspur of Punjab state.
