Ban on liquor sale 48-hr prior to polling

The Pun­jab gov­ern­ment has is­sued di­rec­tions to en­sure the strict com­pli­ance of the guidelines of the Elec­tion Com­mis­sion of In­dia (ECI) con­cern­ing ob­ser­vance of the ‘dry day’ pe­riod on the polling day, May 19.

Chief elec­toral of­fi­cer Dr S Karuna Raju on Tues­day said that as per the guidelines of the ECI, the sale of liquor will be pro­hib­ited in the state 48 hours prior to the polling day and end with the con­clu­sion of polls at 6pm on May 19.

Sim­i­larly, pro­hi­bi­tion on sale of liquor in 3 kms of ad­join­ing ar­eas of neigh­bour­ing states will also be en­sured through con­cerned depart­ments. The steps are aimed to stop any clan­des­tine move­ment of liquor from those ar­eas, he added.
