ROHTAK : Deepak Kumar, son of a labourer from Tur village in Bhiwani district, topped the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) Class 12 examination, the result of which was declared on Wednesday. Deepak got 497 marks out of 500, scoring a perfect 100 in Physics, Chemistry and Sanskrit.

In commerce, Palak of Hisar secured the first position with 494 marks, while Shiv Kumar of Palwal and Shivani Vats of Faridabad jointly shared the top spot in humanities stream with 494 marks.

At Government Senior Secondary School in Bawani Khera where Deepak studied, posts of teachers for physics, chemistry and mathematics were lying vacant. “Since there were no teachers at school, I took private tuitions in physics and chemistry, and my siblings taught me mathematics,” Deepak said. Bhiwani district education officer (DEO) Ajit Singh claimed though the posts of teachers at Deepak’s school were lying vacant, they had deputed teachers from other schools.

Deepak said despite financial hardships, his father Rai Singh ensured proper education to him and his five sisters. His mother Guddi Devi is a homemaker.

“Till Class 10, I studied in a private school but had to shift to government school due to financial constraints,” he said. Deepak wants to be an engineer and “show good days to his family”. Among the districts, Rewari stood on top with 81% students passing the exam, while Palwal was placed at the bottom with only 60% students making a cut.

The pass percentage of Class-12 examination of the Haryana Board of School Education rose to 74.48 this year as compared to last year’s 63.84. The state board declared results on Wednesday.

In the last five years since the Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE) scrapped its moderation policy, this was the best result recorded in the state for Class 12. “Earlier, the results used to be good due to free marks given to students. This year it is good because of students’ own hard-work,” board chairman Jagbir Singh said.

Around 1.91 lakh candidates had appeared in the Class 12 exams that were conducted from March 7 to April 5.

While 1.42 lakh passed the exams, 29,000 got compartments and the rest failed.

Meanwhile, girl students outshined boys once again as their pass percentage is 82.48%, 14 percentage points higher than boys’ pass percentage of 68.01%.

The state has mostly seen the girls outdoing the boys in board exams, but this year the margin was even higher than before.

Compared to urban students, those studying in rural schools performed better. The students of government schools also outperformed their peers in private schools by a margin of four percentage points.
