IN ORDER TO LIVE WELL, WE MUST WORK ON OUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

- M N Tiwari n Innervoice@hindustantimes.com

Today, there are so many discussions on deficits of emotional intelligence in life. Daniel Goleman’s book, Emotional Intelligence, became the best seller as it explained the idea of emotional intelligence to those fixated with only IQ-centric approaches. I read this book and was impressed by the algorithm of IQ and EQ. When it is said that 80% successes of life are decided by EQ ( Emotional Quotient) than the IQ, it becomes imperative to understand the dynamics of emotional intelligence. In Indian philosophy, elaborate descriptions have been given about positive virtues of emotional intelligence and its destroyers have also been identified. It has been narrated that Kama (Sex) Krodha (Anger) Lobh (Greed), Moh (Attachment), Irshya (jealousy), Ahankar (arrogantly proud) are the biggest aberrations of human minds and its Emotional Intelligence . These vices lead to destruction. If we want to grow, we have to eliminate these. There is great admiration of those who mastered the control of these instincts. He who has complete control on his negative instincts and thereby all reactions, masters his life .

Emotional intelligence makes us empathetic, sensitive and wins the hearts of people without fear. Fear lasts only for a while but affection and care are the most sustainable instruments of holding institutions and furthering their goals. Our virtues are our best strategies.
