Heatwave sweeps Punjab, Haryana, Bathinda sees hottest day in 20 years
CHANDIGARH: Severe heatwave conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday, with Bathinda being the hottest place in the region at 47.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Narnaul in Haryana at 47.2 degrees Celsius and Hisar 46.3 degrees Celsius.
As per the agro-meteorological centre of Punjab Agricultural University’s regional research centre, this is the highest temperature recorded in Bathinda since 2000.
The second-highest temperature recorded in this period was 47.2°C on June 8, 2014.
Sweltering heat also swept Patiala in Punjab, which recorded a high of 44.2 degrees Celsius, up by four degrees, Amritsar 43°C, Chandigarh and Jalandhar at 42°C, and Ludhiana at 40°C. The temperature continued to hover around 43°C for the second consecutive day in Amritsar, while the minimum temperature was 26°C.
Among other places in Haryana, Ambala sizzled at 43.8 degrees Celsius, up by five notches, while it was 42.8 degrees Celsius in Karnal.
RAIN ON THE CARDS
According to the Met department forecast, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) is likely at isolated places on May 28 and 31, and with lightning and squally winds (speed 40-50 kmph) on May 29 and 30 in the two states.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) director Surender Paul said western disturbances will be active in the region from May 28 and light rain up to 20mm along with gusty winds blowing at 40kmph can be expected everyday till May 30.
HOTTEST DAY OF THE SEASON IN JAMMU
