TWO MEN WITH THEIR FACES COVERED ENTERED THE HOUSE USING A LADDER ON FRIDAY NIGHT

TARN TARAN An elderly couple was robbed of jewellery worth ₹7 lakh, two firearms and a mobile phone after being taken hostage at gunpoint in their farmhouse allegedly by two unidentified persons at Dasuwal village of Bhikhiwind sub-division of Tarn Taran district on late Friday night.

Before leaving the spot, the robbers, who barged into the house by using a ladder, also took away the digital video recorder (DVR) of the closedcircuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the building.

The incident took place around 12am when the house owner Inderjit Singh (62) and his wife Gurmeet Kaur (60) were sleeping. Inderjit said soon after gaining entry, the robbers started landing blows on them.

“The robbers tried to lock us in a washroom, but I and my wife resisted. They held us hostage in a room at gunpoint and forcibly took keys of the cupboard from which they took around 140 grams of jewellery.

The accused also stole a rifle, a revolver and 37 bullets,” he added.

The couple said the two unidentified persons had covered their faces. Valtoha police station incharge Balwinder Singh said they have registered a case under Sections 392 (robbery) and 457 (house trespass or house-breaking by night) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified persons.

He said the couple has been living alone in the house for the last few years as their son and a daughter live in Australia. Inderjit Singh is a farmer. Kewal Singh, a Congress worker from the village, said the robbers had come barefoot as the signs of their feet were still there.
