No action on slums for four weeks, SC told
NEW DELHI: The Centre told the SC that discussions were underway to implement the court’s August 31 order to remove 48,000 slums located alongside railway tracks in Delhi, and ruled out immediate evictions of their residents, offering them a semblance of relief at a time when the city is battling Covid-19. SC recorded the Centre’s submission that no coercive action will be taken against the slum-dwellers until a decision is taken and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.
“Railways, ministry of housing and urban affairs, and the Delhi government will take a decision on the issue raised in the instant petitions and till a decision is taken,” said solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre.
