Guv writes to Mamata ahead of Delhi visit
KOLKATA: West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday wrote to chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of remaining silent over the post-poll violence in the state. The letter comes a day ahead of Dhankhar’s four-day visit to New Delhi, where he is likely to meet Union home minister Amit Shah.
“With a heavy heart, I am constrained to observe your continued silence and inaction over the post-poll retributive bloodshed, violation of human rights, outrageous assault on the dignity of women, wanton destruction of property, perpetuation of untold miseries on political opponents... worst since independence and it ill augurs for democracy,” said Dhankhar in the letter.
The letter came a day after Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition in state assembly, and 50 other BJP legislators, called on Dhankhar to complain about post-poll violence in the state.
Hitting back, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called the letter a part of the Centre’s ploy to disturb peace in the state. “We have urged multiple times to give us a list of victims... But ever since Mamata Banerjee was sworn in (as CM), the situation has become peaceful. We have never seen the Governor tweet when the Centre does not send Covid-19 vaccines, medicines and oxygen.”
