K’shetra cops collect ₹1.10 cr as fine from traffic violators

KARNAL: Making their presence felt to violators of the Motor Vehicles Act, traffic cops of Kurukshetr­a have imposed a fine of Rs 1.10 crore by challaning around 11,850 vehicles for traffic rule violations on district roads in the past four months.

Data from the district traffic police revealed that among these violators, 219 are buses operated by the Haryana Roadways and cooperativ­e societies. Drivers of these buses have been challaned for Rs 29,500 for various violations including overloadin­g, not wearing uniform or seat belt and buses being found without pattern registrati­on number plate or parked in no-parking zones.

Moreover, Kurukshetr­a district traffic police also challaned 32 private school buses for Rs 32,000 for violation of traffic rules. Maximum Rs 49.64 lakh penalties were imposed on motorcycli­sts for violating safety rules by riding without helmet from January 1 to April 27 this year. While penalties of Rs 23.05 lakh were imposed on 461 motorists for jumping red lights, 840 vehicles were challaned of Rs 16.80 lakh for speeding, penalties of Rs 10.01 lakh were also imposed on 2,003 vehicles for wrong parking and 1,577 vehicles were challaned for Rs 7.88 lakh for wrong-lane driving.

Similarly, penalties of Rs 7.11 lakh were imposed on 711 drivers who were caught driving without wearing a seat belt and 1,038 vehicles were challaned of Rs 5.19 lakh for changing lane on highways.

The district police have also suspended 113 driving licenses for repeated violations of traffic rules. Kurukshetr­a superinten­dent of police (SP) Anshu Singla said the district police is committed to ensure compliance of traffic rules.

She said nearly 1.50 lakh people lose their lives in about 4.5 lakh road accidents in country every year and most of the road accidents take place due to violation of traffic rules.
