SRINAGAR: Two Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) terrorists, including a Pakistani national, who had been tasked with targeting the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, were killed in a gunfight in Srinagar, inspector general Vijay Kumar said on Tuesday.

The Srinagar police said the duo was “neutralised in a swift encounter” in Bemina area of Srinagar just before midnight.

A police spokesperson said, “The two militants were stopped at a special checkpoint near Jhelum Valley Medical College in Bemina. They started indiscriminately firing on cops, which was effectively retaliated.”

“In the initial exchange of fire, five police personnel sustained minor injuries. They were immediately rushed to a hospital,” the police spokesperson said.

The Kashmir IGP said, “Pakistan-based terror handlers had sent two Pakistani LeT terrorists with one Adil Hussain of Pahalgam, with directions to execute terror attacks on the Amarnath Yatra. However, all the three terrorists have been neutralised in two separate encounters at Sopore (June 6) and Bemina, Srinagar.”

Calling the counter-insurgency operation a “big success,” IGP Kumar said, “The slain militants were identified as Abdullah Goujri, a resident of Faisalabad in Pakistan, and Adil Hussain Mir, who also used the aliases Sufian and Musab, a resident of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.”

“As per police records, Mir crossed over to Pakistan in 2018 from Wagah,” he said. The security forces recovered two AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines, Y-SMS device, matrix sheet, Pakistani medicines and other incriminating material from the slain terrorists.

So far, security forces have neutralised 12 militants in Kashmir, while 102 terrorists –72 locals and 30 foreigners – have been killed this year.
