Well-meaning step to contain gun culture

This refers to the report ‘Punjab govt takes aim at gun culture’ (HT, November 14). The decision of the Punjab government to review arms licenses is a laudable step. The government’s well-meaning decision comes close on the heels of two broad-daylight murders of Shiv Sena leader, and a disciple of Dera Sacha Sauda. Equally significant is the step of the government to rein in the culture of selling vulgarity and violence through bad lyrics. Those possessing illegal arms need to be dealt with severely. It also needs to be tough on those seeking to possess arms licence citing threat perception on a flimsy basis.
