At -1.4° C, Srinagar sees season’s coldest night

Srinagar experience­d this season’s coldest night so far as the mercury plunged to minus 1.4 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Freezing temperatur­es were recorded at all weather stations of the Valley, the meteorolog­ical department (MeT) said. MeT officials said Srinagar recorded the minimum temperatur­e of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius on the intervenin­g night of Thursday and Friday, down from minus 0.8 degrees on the night before. “The mercury fell 1.5 degrees below normal in Srinagar during the night,” an official of MeT department said. Pahalgam in the south was the coldest place in the Valley with the night temperatur­e of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, while it was zero degree at the ski resort of Gumlarg in north Kashmir.

In Jammu, the mercury settled at 9.8°C while Banihal recorded a low of 5°C .

Drass freezes at -12.7°C

Ladakh’s Kargil witnessed a minimum temperatur­e of minus 11.3°C while it was minus 8.8°C in Leh. Drass froze at minus 12.7°C.

In HP, hills warmer than plains at night

Despite the onset of winter, nights have been warmer at famous hill stations, including state capital Shimla, Dalhousie and Kufri, than the lower hills and plains in Himachal. Kufri, Dalhousie, Dharamshal­a , Shimla, and Palampur recorded a minimum temperatur­e of 10.5°C, 10.3°C, 9.2°C, 8.6°C, and 7°C, against cities in the lower hills such as Solan, Sundernaga­r, Barthin, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Mandi.
