‘MY ONLY EXPECTATION IS FROM MY MUSIC’

The musician talks about his experience of working in genres of movies and creating music for them

Becoming a music composer was his father’s dream, and in the span of two years, Shashwat Sachdeva has fulfilled that dream. Despite being relatively new in the industry, the Jaipur-born musician has been entrusted with composing the entire album for a movie, and with the latest release, Uri, the makers even asked him to create the background score of the film.

“I am thankful for all the opportunities that have come my way. Having said that, I have been a musician ever since I was a kid. I worked hard, I have been regular with my work, and that’s why I got these opportunities. I believe that if you are a good technician, you will always have a job,” he says.

He made his debut with the Anushka Sharma-Diljit Dosanjh starrer Phillauri (2017), and then composed all but one song in Veere Di Wedding (2018). While the previous films fell somewhere in the ‘romance’ category, Uri is a completely different ball game.

“Different kind of movies require different music, so that it will suit that pallette. The entire point, at the end of the day, is to make an emotional connect with the audience through the music of the film. Veere Di Wedding’s music was happy and fancy, while Phillauri’s was similar but more spiritual. But in Uri, I wanted to show power, aggression and of course patriotism, through the songs, and that was my intention with it,” he says.

“Even in the background score, I didn’t want to repeat any sound that has been heard earlier. I wanted to create sort of a signature sound for the film,” he adds.

While his music is getting popular, Shashwat maintains that he isn’t bothered about meeting people’s expectations. “The only expectation I have is from my music. The only two people who matter to me, when I am composing music for a film, are me and my director. It’s not easy to listen to everyone, and then do things according to them,” he signs off.
