‘SCRIPT IS THE REAL HERO IN FILMS’

Actor Vicky Kaushal, who had a stupendous 2018, wants the focus in cinema to be on the writers

The year 2018 was a turnaround year in Bollywood, as audiences opted for content-driven films over big names. Actor Vicky Kaushal, who garnered a lot of praise both critically and at the box office with his film Uri: The Surgical Strike, agrees that there is a change in the way the audience is looking at actors, as opposed to how it was before.

“They don’t want a hero, they want the story and the script to be the hero,” says Vicky, adding, “In today’s time, if you do one good scene right in a great story and the audience finds out who played the character and remember your name, it is amazing. People today want to take the story back home, not the actor, so it’s a great time to be part of cinema.”

And Vicky feels writers have to be given full credit for the change in the way the hero is perceived in cinema nowadays. “They (writers) are coming up with characters, stories and they are the real heroes of cinema. We are only taking the limelight but it is the writers, who should be applauded for their efforts. We get a script ready in hand. Usse pehle jo mehnat hoti hai woh writer karta hai. We are very lucky to get the script,” adds the Masaan (2015) and Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016) actor.

Vicky had a brilliant 2018 with his projects Love Per Square Foot, Raazi, Lust Stories, Sanju and Manmarziyaan getting lauded, and the success of Uri, which has already crossed the 200crore mark, has only added to his career graph. After such a great run, does he fear failure?

“I don’t take success or failure seriously. I love filmmaking as a process and I enjoy it. Rest, I feel a film has its own destiny. It is up to the audiences, and we are working for them. I don’t really pay too much attention [to other things]. I have just started out [in the film industry],” he says.

“I will explore, test myself as an actor. I might fail or I might pass with flying colours. I am not really tensed about failure. But obviously I don’t want that (failure) to happen,” concludes Vicky, who will next be seen in Karan Johar’s Mughal era drama, Takht.
