Last year has proved to be a breakthrough one for Vikrant Massey, who managed to bag the lead role opposite Deepika Padukone in film-maker Meghna Gulzar’s next. The actor who has been part of critically acclaimed projects like A Death In The Gunj (2016) and Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), says that it is not a conscious attempt to pick unconventional roles.

He says, “I would like a film which presents my versatility in its highest form, however, I’m looking for a more nuanced portfolio, rather than a senseless lead performance. Until I’m unpredictable, it’s all appealing to me. Audiences have appreciated me and loved me so much in whatever I did until now, so, I don’t want to disappoint them by deteriorating my performance levels.” The actor is also a big believer of the phrase, ‘Content is king’. “I’ve always aimed for progressive plots rather than the stereotypical ones. I respect TV for commencing my career and bringing me into light. It had always been my acting school and I learned a lot from it. I thank my films and short films for offering me a wider and different audience. I always desired to do movies or plots that could cause evolution in our society rather than just doing it for the sake of my career. Luckily, I got my kind of associations there as well,” he adds

The actor who was part of two shows in the digital space and is no stranger to it says that along with having a wider reach, a lot of raw talent is also being consumed and rewarded on different mediums. “Raw and unpopular talent is being appreciated and rewarded better now, and that’s how it should have always been. A fair representation is very important for an artiste and I don’t know why anything should limit one’s future work. No perspective should hold enough strength to strip someone of taking pride in where their recognition began. 90% of film stars are doing TV today because of its maximum reach. It’s a door-to-door medium and it will always be a big powerhouse of entertainment for previous generations. Switching mediums for more reach and connect has become quite a common ritual now,” he says.
