Britney Spears joins #FreeBritney movement, speaks out against father

-

Singer-songwriter Britney Spears’ fight to end her conservatorship has taken a new turn as she put her weight behind the social media movement, Free Britney. TMZ has reported that she told the judge, on Friday, that her father, Jamie Spears, committed her to a mental health facility, a month ago, against her will and forced her to take drugs.

The #FreeBritney movement is based on fans’ theory that the Baby One More Time singer was forced into mental health treatment by those in control of her conservatorship.

According to TMZ, Britney spent 30 days at a facility after she began rapidly going downhill. She stopped taking the drugs that kept her stable after they stopped working and doctors have been unable to find the right combination.

Jamie’s conservatorship of his daughter – which began in 2008 after her public meltdown — gives him control of nearly all of Britney’s business and personal affairs. Recently, this

came under public scrutiny as, according to TMZ, Jamie does not have the power to commit Britney against her will.

The judge has ordered an evaluation of Britney’s mental health. The conservatorship will continue unchanged for now.

In January, Britney announced that she was taking an indefinite break from work to support her father, after which she was sent to mental health care. She left the facility after a month of treatment.

Last week, she had filed a case against her former manager Sam Lutfi, alleging that he had been harassing her mother and trying to incite fans with the #FreeBritney movement.
