Mumbai-based musician Ambika Nayak, better known as Kayan, says as a female musician in India, she does face biases and prejudices. “Absolutely, yes,” she says, while adding, “I’m lucky to come from a space where I do receive a lot of love and support from my friends and family, so I feel pretty confident in what I do and what I’m saying. I think it’s important to keep doing what you do unabashedly.”

Does she believe that, as the call for inclusion and diversity grows louder by the day, it will find resonance in the music industry when it comes to having more women?

“There are a lot of females in charge in the music industry; we just have to be more aware. My manager is a woman, I live with another female boss who runs her own management company too. I’m lucky to be surrounded by this kind of energy,” she says.

The singer, producer-DJ, model, actor, and voiceover artiste, recently launched a new song called DFWM (Don’t F**k With Me), which some may say is quite a bold title. “The title is taken from the lyrics of the song. It talks about a toxic relationship pattern and wanting to always have the upper hand in it. I don’t encourage toxic relationship patterns at all. The message is pretty clear,” she wraps up.

Over the course of her 15-year career, Aditi Rao Hydari has made it a point to work in films in a variety of languages rather than stick to Hindi — from the National Award-winning Kaatru Veliyidai (2017) to her most recent film, Hey Sinamika. The actor also admits that working with filmmaker Mani Ratnam was the sole reason she became an actor. And with Kaatru, her wish came true: “I just wanted to be a Mani Ratnam heroine. When I had this dream of being an actor, it seemed like an impossible dream. But somewhere in my head, I was like, ‘One day I have to do a Tamil film’. I was determined that if and when it happened, I would just work so hard, like on my class 10 and 12 board exams, so I could enjoy the process of being directed by this incredible person.”

On switching to another language and the challenges that come with it, the 35year-old says, “My dream was so strong that I knew it would be possible to get out of my comfort zone in terms of language and put myself out there and be ready for it.”

She adds, “Also, stories are universal; feelings don’t have language. If you can make somebody feel something, whether you speak that language or are from that culture or country, you are theirs and they are yours.”
