In October, former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, 64, was convicted on charges of providing insider tips to tainted hedge-fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam. FALLOUT: Two years prison and a $5 million fine, a lighter sentence than US prosecutors had demanded WHY WE CARE: Because until the scam unravelled Gupta was the poster boy of Indian business. His difficult early years — he was orphaned at 18 — fantastic academic career (IIT Delhi, Harvard Business School), phenomenal success and philanthropic activities made him a hugely respected figure. BILL GATES ON GUPTA: “Many millions of people are leading better lives — or are alive at all thanks to the efforts he so ably supported.”
