These pantsuits blend power and ease
The pantsuit spells power. Maybe that’s why, as women become more and more assertive, this style has been growing its fan base, both among celebrities and among everyday women. While sharp tailoring is still the hallmark of power dressing, the recent trend of oversized clothing has come to pantsuits, too.
We’ve spotted designer Masaba Gupta, actor Sonam K Ahuja, and producer Rhea Kapoor in oversized pantsuits. Analysing the trend, designers say that the fashion world is embracing effortless style. “It’s all about comfort now. Casual and effortless clothing has become a style statement,” says designer Samant Chauhan. “These oversized pantsuits are an extension of wearing loose and anti-fit things. Personally, I like fitted ensembles. However, anti-fit is the new fit.”
Designer Anand Bhushan says, “These pantsuits add an extra edge, and are meant to look sexless.” The lack of contours draws attention to the wearer’s personality rather than to physical proportions.
However, designer Payal Khandwala doesn’t support oversized, or anything that’s too tight. “I think clothes and skin need room to breathe,” she says. “Unless you have the personality to carry off your grandfather’s suit, [pick] one that sits close to your body and flatters your silhouette.”
With winter approaching, these suits are a great choice. Stylist Sahil Gulati says, “Oversized pantsuits can be layered stylishly. Monotone works best for fabrics such as velvet. Team it with a contrasting sweatshirt or a cardigan.”
