‘Women are depicted too glamorously to titillate the audience’
He refers to himself as a ‘big feminist’ and perhaps that’s why when actor Annu Kapoor talks about how women are being portrayed in Bollywood cinema, he admits and condemns that female actors are shown as glamourous figures in films. However, he strongly feels that recently there has been a “tremendous shift”.
“The woman with a new perspective and attitude is more outspoken, liberal and aggressive, which we get to see in today’s time. But women are depicted too glamorously to titillate the audience,” he rues.
The veteran actor says that earlier women only added the glam quotient to the film. He adds,“Earlier, no matter how cold the weather was, the heroines were made to dance wearing georgette saris with the hero roaming in a jacket. It is a misogynist attitude.”
The 63-year-old shares that though Bollywood looks very glamourous from outside, its charm doesn’t stay for too long. “External glamour of the entertainment world looks fascinating but it fades away with time. I find it funny when I see actors wearing revealing clothes calling it fashion,” he opines. To be seen next in Rumy Jaffery’s Chehre starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kapoor believes that glamour is created in the industry and in a way is a reflection of the society. “Nothing comes from outer space. It is all created by the people here which is to meet the demand. Thus, we supply,” he says.
