His pets are his security guards

Kunal Basu (60), a developer and owner of Hotel Anjali at Kantatoli Chowk, Ranchi, is simply fascinated by animals. He takes care of 12 dogs, 3 calves, 12 cats and uncountable pigeons which flock to his backyard twice a day to feast.

Basu fell in love with animals when he was only 12. He was on way to home from school when he spotted a street dog wailing from hunger and a broken leg in Bhagalpur village. He brought the dog home.

It was his love for animals which saw him becoming a complete vegetarian. “I though, I could save at least a hundred goats and chickens in my lifetime. Thankfully, my wife and children are all equally fond of animals as much as I am,” said Basu.

While Basu ensures overall wellbeing of his pets, his wife Rupali takes care of their food, baths and clothing. Each year, all the pets get their individual winter coats to stay cozy during the season.

The duo’s favourite pet is Lolo, a Labrador, who considers himself the master of the house. Also, she is known to be able to identify their car horn even from a distance of 300 metres. “Out of so many cars honking on the roads, she identifies ours, and we get such a warm welcome. It is so overwhelming. I love it,” says Basu.

Interestingly, Basu in his 40 years of stay in Ranchi has never used a lock and key to keep his household secure. His pets are his security guards.
