RANCHI: A fresh spell of cold wave condition has gripped Jharkhand with night temperatures dipping by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in 24 hours. Weathermen have predicted that the minimum temperature may continue to fall till Friday across the state.

Night temperature at Bokaro Thermal, around 50 km from Bokaro City, has reached nearly the freezing point. The place recorded a minimum temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius while 1 degree Celsius was recorded at McCluskieganj, 65 km from Ranchi. The minimum temperature in Daltonganj stood at 3.3 degrees Celsius. Bokaro deputy commissioner Sunil Kumar has ordered the suspension of junior classes. Classes from the first up to the eighth standard would not take place till January 12.

“Chilly north-westerly wind from Monday evening has again invited the cold wave in Jharkhand. The sky became clear and helped the night temperature to dip further. However, the day temperature may be comparatively comfortable,” AK Sen, director of Met office, said.

Sen added that the state might get respite from intense cold wave condition from Saturday. It was bone-chilling cold for the residents of the state capital with night temperatures dipping to 6.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday from 12.5 degrees Celsius recorded on Monday. The Ranchi Met office said that the minimum tempera- ture is 3 degrees below normal.

Bokaro City recorded 3.9 degrees Celsius. Jamshedpur recorded 10 degrees Celsius while Dhanbad recorded 9 degrees Celsius. The fresh spell of cold wave condition has put the district administrations in a fix. They have demanded more funds from the disaster management department (DMD).

The state DMD had allotted R1 lakh to each district in December for purchasing firewoods for lighting bonfires to give relief to the homeless and pavement dwellers.

The Lohardaga deputy commissioner, Sudhanshu Bhusan Ram, said that they need R1 lakh more to tackle the fresh spell of cold wave. Dhanbad has demanded R3 lakh. JP Lakra, the joint secretary of state DMD, said that they have received the demands for more funds from various districts. “We have not yet decided, but are considering the demand of the districts,” Lakra said.

Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani donated 400 blankets for distributing them among the poor. Blankets were also distributed among 50 students of Madarsa Islamia on Main Road and 88 students of Rajkiya Anushuchit Janjati Awasia Madhya Vidyalaya.
