Police say five of accused have confessed

BISADA (GREATER NOIDA): At least five people accused of murdering a Muslim man on a rumour that he had killed a cow have confessed to their role in the crime, senior police officials told HT on Monday, with their testimonie­s video recorded.

The five are among 11 people who have been named accused in the lynching of Bisada resident Mohammad Ikhlaq by a mob of around 200 people on September 29.

His younger son Danish was left critically injured in the attack.

“We are corroborat­ing their statements. The investigat­ion is on. We are waiting to record the statement of Ikhlaq’s son who is a very important eye witness. He is still recovering in hospital”, Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Kiran Shivkumar said.

The accused were also named by Ikhlaq’s wife, who also witnessed the attack. Police sources told HT that the accused said in their statement that “they were incensed when they heard about the cow slaughter”. The assistance comes days after India submitted an ambitious climate plan that announced plans to aggressive­ly ramp up energy generation from non-fossil fuel sources to 40% of power generated by 2030.
