DHANBAD: The sounds of gunshot were again heard on the streets of Wasseypur infamous for gang wars, after a lull of about a year on Sunday night, when a middleaged man was shot at and injured near Panderpala in Dhanbad.

Gang rivalry in Wasseypur inspired Anurag Kashyap to make a Bollywood blockbuster in two parts: Gang Wars of Wasseypur 1 and 2.

The district police t old Hindustan Times on Monday that the shooting might have been the fallout of a rivalry between ganglord Fahim Khan’s nephew Gopi Khan and Raju Khan who has criminal background.

The armed men had, in fact, targeted Raju who was on a bike with one of his friends Mustafa Ansari alias Dickey Ansari, police said.

However, while Raju had a close shave, the bullets hit Ansari who was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be ‘critical’, police added.

Preliminary investigation revealed that shooters were hired by Fahim who is cooling his heels in Dumka jail in connection with

a murder.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) DN Banka told Hindustan Times, “The needle of suspicion keeps pointing towards Gopi Khan, a member of Fahim’s gang which is trying to liquidate the rivals.”

Records available with the police revealed that Fahim had bumped off Raju’s cousin, Tuna, brother-in-law of the jailed gangster, following a business dispute in September last year.

Wesseypur has seen killing of more than 15 people due to bitter gang wars between Sabir Alam and Fahim Khan in the past two decades.

The gang wars began after Khan and Alam, who were once friends, had turned foes in 1995 and formed separate gangs which fought over extortion from contractors engaged in coal lifting and railway tenders.
