JAMSHEDPUR: Shakti, a new Android app aimed at women’s safety, was launched online by chief minister Raghubar Das from Ranchi on Wednesday for the people of Jamshedpur.

The app will help women connect with the police at the push of a button on their mobile phones.

Police officials from East Singhbhum, including senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew, city superintendent of police (SP) Chandan Jha were present at the police control room (PCR) in Jamshedpur to witness the launch of Shakti app from Ranchi, but due to some technical glitch it could not be telecast here.

The police department said women living in Sakchi, Bistupur, Sonari, Kadma, Golmuri, Sitaramdera and Sidhgora police station areas would be able to use this app.

On Tuesday, the trial-run of the app was successfully conducted, said officials, adding they would continue to monitor its operations for three months.

Those having android phone with net connectivity could download the app, which consists of a power button connected with police control room. When pressed, the power button would send out a signal about the location of the phone and the police would be able to locate the site through the global positioning system (GPS).

SSP Mathew said after the successful experiment of the app in the seven police stations, it would be provided to other police stations of Jamshedpur and adjacent areas.

Additional director general of police-cum-spokesperson of Jharkhand police, SN Pradhan said the dial 100 facilities would continue to function as usual in other parts of the city.
