KOTA: Less than a month after getting admission into a coaching institute in Kota, a 19-year-old student allegedly committed suicide at his hostel in Landmark City area, police said on Wednesday.

Kunhadi police station house officer Ram Khiladi Meena said no suicide note was recovered from Nikhil Kumar’s hostel room but a paper was found on which he had written ‘Medical Hay..’, ‘mummy’ and ‘papa’ many times.

Every year, more than 1.5 lakh students from across the country enrol in the 40-odd coaching institutes in Kota to prepare for competitive entrance examinations.

Tuesday’s incident has taken the student suicide count in Kota this year to nine while nearly 60 students have killed themselves in the city in the last five years, most of them are attributed to fear of failure.

Kunhadi police station officials said Nikhil Kumar hailed from Bihar’s Bhagalpur and had come to the city last month to take medical entrance coaching. The police got to know about the suicide from Nikhil’s hostel mates who complained of foul smell on Tuesday night. The body was found hanging through a towel from the shower tap in the bathroom.

Police said the mobile call details of the student suggested that he talked to his mother at 1am on July 1 and also around 10am in the morning same day. But several missed calls of his mother and others suggest that the he committed suicide on July 1. He did not attend his coaching class after 30th June.

Despite several measures being adopted by the government and NGOs, student suicides continue unabated in this coaching hub.
