RANCHI: The state meteorology department has predicted intermittent rain over the next 48 hours in the state, with heavy showers in the northwest districts, including Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka and Dhanbad.

State met director BK Mandal said, “Ranchi witnessed 25mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, which is satisfactory.”

Heavy rain since Sunday has caused water logging in many parts of Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad. In the capital’s Ratu Road, Hindpiri and a few parts of Hinoo and Ashok Vihar, many houses have been flooded.

“During the summer, we faced water crisis. Now, the monsoon has caused water logging,” said Sooraj Singh, a resident of Ashok Vihar.

More than 800 residents of Adarshnagar in Jamshedpur had had sleepless nights due to water logging in their low-lying houses, forcing many to vacate the ground floor.

Jharkhand was declared drought-hit after poor monsoon last year. The rising temperatures had dried up several water bodies, ponds, wells and tube wells. The water table in the Maithon dam of Dhanbad, Dimna Lake at Jamshedpur and Rucca Dam at Ranchi had plummeted, compelling authorities to consider rationing water to local denizens.

This year, met figures say, the state witnessed a rainfall deficit of only 13%, receiving 224.5 mm of rainfall against the ideal of 258.2 mm, which isn’t a major deficit, officials said.

Though the monsoon entered Jharkhand at a very slow pace this year, it has now gained momentum.

“This rain would be highly beneficial for the farmers who had to suffer last year,” said Birsa Agriculture University’s agro-meteorological scientist A Wadood.
